Today, Arnold Schwarzenegger posted a video on Facebook that reminds us of what we ought to see from Republicans when reacting to Nazis and white supremacists. While he takes Trump to task for his defense of white supremacy, that could be dismissed by many on the right due to the well-known animosity between Arnold and Donald. But its what he has to say directly to the neo-Nazis and white supremacists themselves that makes this video a thing of beauty. First, he comes right out at the beginning with the most forthright statement I’ve heard from a Republican yet:
There are not two sides to bigotry. There are not two sides to hatred.
He goes on to tell Trump what he should have said in reaction to Charlottsville, but it’s what come next that is the real gem of the video.
I have a message to the neo-Nazis, the white nationalists, the neo-Confederates. Let me be as blunt as possible: Your heroes are losers. You are supporting a lost cause. Believe me, I knew the original Nazis. I was born in Austria in 1947, shortly after the Second World War. Growing up, I was surrounded by broken men, men who came home from the war filled with shrapnel and guilt, men who were misled into a losing ideology. And I can tell you: these ghosts you idolize spent the rest of their lives living in shame. And right now, they’re resting in hell.
The rest of the video is just as good. If only we could hear the same from the rest of the GOP, we might actually send the “alt-right” and all their racist baggage back to the oblivion they crawled out of to follow Herr Drumph. Watch the video yourself, and see what the Republicans could be if they’d just grow a spine and stand up to hate and racism. Then share it far and wide, especially to every Republican you know.
