Arnold Schwarzenegger may be a former Republican governor, but he doesn’t seem amused by the idea of cheaters prospering. In 2017, he held a press conference on the steps of the Supreme Court as they debated an (ultimately failed) anti-gerrymandering ruling. During that press conference, he urged SCOTUS to “say hasta la vista” to gerrymandering.
Now the Schwarzenegger Institute has helped promote independent redistricting ballot initiatives to voters in three states that have passed them: Michigan, Missouri and Colorado. It’s easy to imagine that, as an immigrant who has benefited enormously from pro-immigration policies, Arnold feels he has a vested interest in protecting his adopted country from anti-immigrant racism. Whatever his reasons, we can only hope that more Republicans follow his lead.
